Ltd.006 - a hidden Treasure returns

There are moments during more than 30 years of researching the Volkswagen Golf Limited that remind you why this passion never fades.

Discovering Golf Limited No. 006 was exactly one of those moments.

For many years, this car was completely unknown to me. Its owner, now 77 years old, had quietly followed VW-Racing.org from the very beginning. He had read my forum posts more than 25 years ago, followed the development of this website over the years, and always believed that one day "Eggerson" would be the right person to help bring his Golf Limited back to life.

That day has finally arrived.

From Bremerhaven to Southern Germany

Golf Limited No. 006 has had only two owners since new.

Its first owner was Mrs. Gumpricht, owner of the Volkswagen dealership Autohaus Gumpricht in Kuchen. Determined to own a Golf Limited, she initially tried to order one directly through Volkswagen Motorsport. Unfortunately, all vehicles had already been allocated.

However, two Golf Limiteds originally destined for the Swedish market remained in Bremerhaven after they could not be imported due to Swedish emissions regulations. Mrs. Gumpricht travelled to Bremerhaven, selected one of these two cars, and brought home what would become Golf Limited No. 006.

She drove the car for approximately 20,000 kilometres before eventually selling it to a local customer.

A Golf... or Something Special?

The second owner first noticed the car in the showroom of his local Volkswagen dealer. Being friends with the dealership, he eventually purchased it.

At the time, he simply believed he was buying a Volkswagen Golf.

He had no idea that he had just become the owner of one of Volkswagen Motorsport's rarest creations.

Only later, while using the car as his everyday vehicle, did he begin to realise that something about this Golf was different. Time and again, people approached him at petrol stations, parking lots and traffic lights, asking if they could take a closer look at the car—or even under the bonnet.

Curiosity eventually led him to research the Golf Limited himself, gradually discovering just how special his car really was.

a Life Well Lived

Unlike many collector cars that spent their lives hidden away, No. 006 fulfilled the purpose for which it had originally been built.

It served as an everyday family car.

Summer and winter alike, it covered approximately 170,000 kilometres and became part of daily life for the entire family.

In 2003, however, it was finally retired from regular use and carefully stored away in a garage, where it has remained ever since.

Rediscovered After More Than Two Decades

By pure coincidence, we recently became aware of Golf Limited No. 006.

Although more than twenty years have passed since it was last driven, the car has survived remarkably well. Naturally, years of storage have left their mark, and several age-related mechanical issues will need to be addressed before it can safely return to the road.

Together, Matteo and I have now taken on the challenge of bringing this remarkable survivor back to life.

Our goal is not only to preserve another original Golf Limited but also to tell the story of a car that spent most of its life doing exactly what Volkswagen intended it to do, being driven.

the Journey Begins...

The restoration of Golf Limited No. 006 has only just begun.

As work progresses, we will continue to document every step of the project here on VW-Racing.org and share the journey of returning this remarkable "barn find" to the road where it belongs.

We look forward to taking you along for the journey.
