The Mystery Golf Limited

One Offer. One Decision. One Important Lesson.

For more than 30 years, I have been researching the Volkswagen Golf Limited.

Over the years, I have received countless messages about supposedly unknown cars.

Most of them turn out to be misunderstandings, old advertisements or cars that are already known.

This story began exactly the same way.

A Familiar Discovery

The first time I heard about this Golf Limited was through an eBay advertisement.

The advertisement quickly attracted attention and was later featured in an article by Auto Motor und Sport.

Like many other enthusiasts, this was the moment I first became aware of the car.

The description sounded almost too good to ignore.

The Auto Motor und Sport article was the first time I became aware of the Golf Limited. The report was based on information provided by the seller and sparked considerable interest within the Golf Limited community.

First Contact

At that moment, I believed I was about to discover another previously unknown Golf Limited.
At that moment, I believed I was about to discover another previously unknown Golf Limited.

A few months after the Golf Limited had attracted attention through an eBay advertisement and an article published by Auto Motor und Sport, I unexpectedly received a WhatsApp message.

The message described an original Golf Limited with just 28,000 kilometres, first ownership, complete documentation and the original sales invoice. Naturally, it immediately caught my attention. A Golf Limited matching that description would be an extraordinary discovery.

At this stage, I had no reason to question the offer. Like many other enthusiasts, I was simply excited to learn more.

The more we talked, the more I realised this would not be a traditional car sale.

The plan was to tell the story of the Golf Limited, document its journey and eventually film the handover for social media.

I genuinely liked the idea.

The conversations remained open, friendly and transparent.

As someone who has documented the history of the Golf Limited for more than 30 years, I understood the value of telling a good story.

I even suggested bringing the car to my workshop, where three other Golf Limiteds were already waiting.

Four Golf Limiteds together would have made for a truly unique moment.

From Messages to Phone Calls

After our first WhatsApp messages, the conversation continued with several voice calls.

We discussed the Golf Limited, their idea of telling its story on social media, and how the eventual handover could become part of that story.

One point was repeated several times: no advance payment or deposit would be required before I had the opportunity to inspect the car.

The focus was on finding the right buyer and telling the story of the Golf Limited.

The conversations were open, friendly and detailed, and I genuinely believed we were moving towards a straightforward purchase.

That gave me confidence that the process would remain transparent.

Looking back, those words would later take on a completely different meaning.

Bringing the Car to Austria

Instead, I was told that their preferred option was to bring the car to my workshop in Austria.

This was certainly unusual, but I understood the idea behind it.

At that point, I still believed we were working towards the same goal.

The plan was to document the surprise, film the arrival of the car and tell the story on social media.

I genuinely liked this idea and agreed to take part.

In fact, I suggested presenting the car alongside the three Golf Limiteds already in my workshop.

It would have been a unique opportunity to show four Golf Limiteds together.

The Turning Point

Everything changed when the discussion shifted from the car itself to a reservation payment.

Before I knew the Limited's identity, had seen recent photographs or verified the car in person, I was asked to sign a reservation agreement and transfer a €500 reservation fee.

It was not the amount that concerned me, but the change in the process.

That was the moment my excitement turned into caution.

My Decision

I explained that my decision had nothing to do with the amount of money.

It was never about the €500.

Whether the reservation fee had been €500 or €50,000, my decision would have been the same.

For me, it was simply a matter of principle.

For me, trust has always been built on transparency.

Before making any payment, I wanted to know which Golf Limited I was dealing with, see recent photographs and verify the car's identity.

Without that level of transparency, I decided not to continue.

Lessons Learned

I cannot say whether the Golf Limited was exactly as described, because I never had the opportunity to inspect the car in person.

What I can say is that this experience reinforced one important lesson I have learned after more than 30 years of researching these cars.

Excitement should never replace verification.

Every buyer must make their own decision, but for me one principle will always remain the same:

Transparency comes before payment.

This article reflects my personal experience during a proposed Golf Limited purchase. Every reader should draw their own conclusions based on the information presented here.

Every Golf Limited has its own story. Sometimes, the search becomes part of the story.
